Camino en Londres por la calle de Portobello, gozando con el colorido de sus casas y tiendas y los puestos callejeros y me imagino cómo debió haber sido en los sesenta cuando era el barrio de moda si ahora sigue siendo tan atractivo y sugerente y divertido.
Al llegar a los números 248 al 250 me sorprende una casa de tres plantas con un rótulo en la fachada Café García, alimentos y vinos de España.
Como estoy de paso y sólo soy medio gallego no es que tenga morriña, pero puedo asegurar que me alegré al entrar en una enorme tienda y ver tantos y tantos productos españoles, lo mejor de nuestras conservas, vinos, aceites, jamones, cecina, chorizos, turrones, chocolates, colonias, mazapanes, fabada, tortilla, hasta La Casera….en fin, todo lo que uno podría echar de menos lejos de casa.
O en casa, porque la mitad de los clientes son españoles pero la otra mitad son ingleses que han conocido y gustado en España nuestros manjares.
Lógicamente en la tienda pregunto por el señor García y saludo a un caballero de pelo blanco y muy buen aspecto, muy amable, que se llama Rafael García Ríos y no oculta que tiene 84 años. Toda una vida en Londres, me cuenta, trabajando para sacar adelante a su familia, que hoy va ya por la tercera generación.
Durante la guerra civil Española Francisco y su esposa, Isabel, se tuvieron que refugiar en Gibraltar con dos niños pequeños, Rafael y Antonio.
Después, al comienzo de la II Guerra Mundial, Isabel y sus hijos fueron enviados a Jamaica mientras Francisco, que no podía ir al frente por no ser inglés, fue reclutado para una fábrica de armamento.
Al final del conflicto montaron una tienda con productos españoles, que en la década de los cincuenta se convertiría en esta gran tienda, una auténtica embajada de la producción agroalimentaria española.
Muchas felicidades a esta gran familia, todo un ejemplo de unos inmigrantes que huyendo de una guerra injusta supieron llegar a lo más alto y poner la marca España donde se merece.

Rafael Garcia & Sons: The whole of Spain in one London shop
I walk along London’s Portobello Road enjoying the colour of its houses, shops and flea market stalls and keep wondering how it must have been in the 60’s, when this used to be a fashionable neighbourhood. Nowadays it still keeps the attractive, fun and suggesting atmosphere.
When I arrive at number 248-250, a big three Storey house with a huge sign outside catches my attention: “CAFÉ GARCIA, WINES AND FOOD FROM SPAIN”
I am only passing by and I am half Galician, but I cannot help the temptation and I decide to walk inside this enormous Spanish shop. I see so many products from Spain; nothing but the best: wines, olive oil, Serrano hams, chocolate, turrón, Spanish tortilla and even La Casera lemonade!! Anything and everything one would miss from home. Or even at home, as half the clientelle is Spanish and the other half is British, the ones who know of our products from their visits to Spain.
As it is customary in these cases, I ask for Mr. Garcia and I meet a white haired good looking gentleman who calls himself Rafael Garcia Rios. He doesn’t hide his age, 84 years old,. A whole life in London (he tells me) working to keep his family, now in its third generation in UK.
During the Spanish Civil war, his father Francisco and his mother Isabel with their two children Rafael and Antonio, had to find refuge in Gibraltar. Later, at the start of World War II, Isabel and the boys were sent to Jamaica and Francisco was sent to England and given a job at a weapons factory.
At the end of the war, the family opened a small Spanish products shop and in the 50’s it became the big shop it is now – a great authentic embassy of Spanish goods.
Many congratulations to this great family, an example of Spanish immigrants who fleeing a terrible unfair war, were able to reach the highest hight and put our Spanish products in the place where they belong.
